What defines crazy?

What is it about a person that makes you think to yourself “they are crazy”? I have been called crazy a lot of times, but I do not think that I am. Yes, I am opinionated and I do not bite my tongue, but that would make me honest, not crazy. Merriam-Webster defines crazy as “being out the ordinary” and “impractical” and “erratic”. So should an insane person be referred to as crazy? Or are they different? I think people are quick to label or place something/people misunderstood into a category. I may suffer from bipolar II disorder, and my moods can shift but I am not crazy. Just like someone suffering from schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder is not crazy. But people are quick to put us in the same “crazy” box. Mental illness is misunderstood by many and there needs to be more awareness. We are battling a disorder that in most cases cannot be cured. That is why some feel the only way out is suicide. I don’t know what made me write about this, but it is beginning to annoy me when I’m called crazy because of my disorder. Now, I am not saying that I want a pity party. I definitely don’t need your sympathy. I just want people to understand that mental illness is not simply “being crazy”. It’s serious. Very serious. Make yourself familiar with a few mental illnesses. Just read up and make yourself aware. It could very well help you with someone you know, or you may be able to identify the symptoms to get someone help. I’m just thinking out loud on paper.

Yours Truly
